A korhadó diófa rönkje a kertben kiváló táptalajnak bizonyul a különféle gombák számára. Újabban - négy-öt másik faj mellett - a ganoderma nemzetség is képviselteti magát. Május óta lehet figyelemmel követni, és úgy tűnik még nem állt meg a növésben. Értő gombászok biztos tudják, hogy pontosan melyik faj lehet. (Pecsétviaszgomba? Óriás lakkostapló?) A Ganoderma név a görög ganos→ ragyogás, fényesség és derma → bőr szavak összetételéből ered.
Egyik népszerű faja a Ganoderma lucidum (Linghzi mushroom), melynek gyógyhatást tulajdonítanak.

The young sporocarp has a pencillike shape, later the fruit body becomes more shelflike.
This species is a polypore fungus (tubes, no gills). I have found some on a decayed stump of a walnut-tree in May. Since I did not know what to expect I took photos regularly. The first lumps reminded me of marshmallows: soft, white. Then I noticed the reddish-brown skin, which made it easy to identify the family and genus. Now it is the eng of June and it still appears to be growing (see the white edges).
Ganoderma (Greek) loosely translates to "shiny skin":
ganos→ brightness, sheen
derma → skin
